Progressive Baptist Church and Salem Chicago Feed 3,000 Families Amid SNAP Stoppage

As the nation faced a temporary SNAP benefit stoppage, two South Side churches — Progressive Baptist Church and Salem Baptist Church of Chicago — joined forces to provide relief where it was needed most.

At 75th and King Drive, volunteers from both congregations spent hours distributing bags of food to more than 3,000 families struggling with the sudden loss of assistance. Cars stretched down the block as residents lined up for groceries and fresh produce, grateful for the support.

Church workers packed and handed out food throughout the day, showing how faith and community can fill the gap when government programs pause.

Pastor leaders from both churches said their goal was simple — to make sure no family went hungry during the holiday season.

Events like this highlight the power of local action in hard times: when systems fail, neighbors step up.
