Chicago native Keendra Shelton, a former women’s basketball player at Jackson State University from 2015 to 2018, has returned to her hometown with a mission: to develop the next generation of female athletes. Today, she serves as the head coach of the girls basketball program at Morgan Park High School, where she’s building a culture rooted in discipline, opportunity, and growth.
From Jackson State to Coaching the Next Generation
Shelton’s basketball journey took her from Chicago to the Division I stage, where she earned recognition for her toughness, teamwork, and dedication during her years at Jackson State. Now she brings that same energy and standard of excellence to the sidelines at Morgan Park.
Her approach is centered on teaching fundamentals, elevating basketball IQ, and giving her players the confidence and tools needed to compete at a high level.

Helping Chicago Girls Grow On and Off the Court
For many of the girls in the program, basketball is more than a sport—it’s a path toward structure, mentorship, and future opportunities. Coach Shelton is committed to giving her players the kind of guidance and exposure she once benefited from, helping them improve not just as athletes but as young women preparing for life after high school.
A Growing Program That Needs Community Support
Like many public school programs, resources are limited. Travel tournaments, competitive showcases, high-quality training equipment, and fresh team uniforms all come with significant costs.
Shelton is seeking donations to support team travel, updated gear, and essential equipment—all of which help the girls compete against top programs, gain college exposure, and feel confident representing their school.
