The Movement Starts Here: Free Lunch Academy Teaching Youth to Lead Through Art

Founded by Chicago playwright and business consultant Calvin King III, Free Lunch Academy blends creativity, mentorship, and education to help young people grow into the best versions of themselves—one choice at a time.

With over 30 stage works to his name, Calvin’s journey from playwright to youth mentor began after becoming a father, educator, and youth pastor. His experiences inspired him to use entertainment as a teaching tool, creating programs that make learning fun, expressive, and socially meaningful.

At Free Lunch Academy, students build social-emotional skills through theater, visual arts, and leadership activities. The organization’s Creative Youth Employment Program also prepares young people—especially from Black communities—for real careers through paid work and entrepreneurship training.

By partnering with local organizations and mentoring young artists, Calvin and his team have created a safe space where youth learn to express themselves, resolve conflicts, and discover their potential. The academy’s larger mission is bold: to eradicate bullying worldwide by 2025 while equipping a new generation to lead with empathy and creativity.

Free Lunch Academy continues to prove that when art meets purpose, it can transform not just classrooms—but entire communities.
