Highlighted here are three standout bookstores on the South Side, each with a unique mission and story.
Da Book Joint
Location: 6900 S Stony Island Ave, Chicago, IL (South Shore)
Founded in 2007 by Verlean Singletary and now co-owned with her daughter Courtney Woods, Da Book Joint is a beloved mother-daughter-run treasure specializing in African American literature across all genres. From bestselling novels to children’s books and Christian titles, the store emphasizes diverse authors and positive youth engagement. Honey & Hue Bookstore
Location: 1804 W 103rd St, Chicago, IL (Beverly)
A fresh addition to Chicago’s scene, Honey & Hue opened its doors in late 2025, founded by Chicago native Raven R. White (with her daughter Kennedy). White, who previously ran a similar bookstore in Texas, returned home to create an upscale space dedicated to building community and bridging literacy gaps. The store curates books by Black, Indigenous, and authors of color, alongside art, music, and local indie works. Burst Into Books
Location: 119 E 107th St, Chicago, IL (Roseland)
Founded in 2018 by educator Jurema Gorham, Burst Into Books is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a physical community arts space and bookstore. Its mission is to transform lives through access to culturally responsive literature, especially for underserved youth. The organization hosts storytimes, workshops, book giveaways, literary festivals, and creative programs, impacting thousands of readers.
